PIERRE PAUZE
BIO
Pierre Pauze is a French artist and filmmaker whose work explores how technology transforms the way we produce images, value, narratives, and collective beliefs.
Working across film, installation, and digital systems, his practice draws from artificial intelligence, blockchain, internet culture, science, economics, and law. Rather than treating technology as a subject to illustrate, Pauze often uses technological systems themselves as artistic material: protocols, networks, algorithms, financial mechanisms, or legal structures can become part of the work.
A recurring interest in his practice is the way images acquire power through circulation. His recent research looks at memes and internet-native characters as a new form of collective mythology: images that can be created by an individual, transformed by thousands of people, distributed by algorithms, and eventually generate their own communities and economies. This has led him to investigate questions of authorship, ownership, virality, and value in the age of generative AI.
Pauze regularly collaborates with scientists, engineers, and researchers. His projects often begin with existing technologies or scientific ideas and develop them into experiments, fictional systems, or films. His work moves between speculation and implementation: some projects remain narratives, while others involve building actual technological or economic mechanisms.
Film plays a central role in his practice. Situated between science fiction, documentary, and experimental cinema, his films use fiction to investigate systems that are often difficult to see directly, from technological infrastructures to scientific models and economic structures. Mass, created with June Balthazard, explores matter, emptiness, and perception through a narrative combining scientific research and science fiction.
More broadly, Pauze’s work examines a recurring question: what happens when technologies begin to produce not only tools and images, but also new forms of culture, belief, and power?
He is a recipient of the Artagon Prize, the Agnès b. Prize, the ADAGP Digital Art & Video Revelation Prize, and the Hauts-de-Seine Prize at the Salon de Montrouge. His work has been presented at institutions and exhibitions including Centre Pompidou, Monnaie de Paris, FIAC, La Villette, Es Baluard in Palma, K Museum of Contemporary Art in Seoul, Luma Arles, and Centre Pompidou-Metz, as well as the Taipei, Beijing Digital Art, and Chengdu biennials.
His films have also been presented in cinemas and international film festivals. He is currently a resident at POUSH, following previous residencies at the Cité internationale des arts and The Spur.
